What services do you provide?
Play-by-play commentary for television and radio; voice over work; television production; desk hosting in a television, digital and radio format; creative and copy writing.
How did you get into sports broadcasting?
More or less, I was in the right place at the right time. I was attending community college and didn’t know what I wanted to do but was taking some broadcasting classes when my professor suggested an internship with Sporting Kansas City. It was right after their rebrand and new stadium being built so they had a lot of positive momentum in the community. I said, “Absolutely, let’s do it,” and everything since is a snowball effect from that agreement.
Who are some of your sports broadcasting inspirations?
I grew up listening to Denny Matthews call Royals games on the radio. His voice is so even-keeled and matter-of-fact; it was like he was in the car next to you on a warm summer evening. Mike Kelly describing the action of Mizzou athletics has always been a favorite whether Mizzou was winning or losing. Third would be a Kansas City legend who’s gone national: Kevin Harlan. Everything he works feels like the Super Bowl but without being too uptight. You know he’s having fun while still taking it seriously.
Why sports? You could do anything else!
My favorite moment in sports is the five minutes or so before kick-off, tip-off, puck drop, lights out, etc. Usually the intermediate moment between the anthem, hype videos and the actual start of the game. Atmospheres make games. You know when it’s a big game because the atmosphere right before the leap matches it. You can feel the crowd boiling over, you see the players dialing in and the nervous energy seeps into your bones. Whether I’m a fan or working, I try to always do nothing but be in the moment at this time. It’s a legal high you can’t mainline anywhere else. It’s authentic and then it’s go time.
